Two propane tanks and a downed power line made it harder for firefighters to extinguish a fire that destroyed a Newtown home Monday morning.
The fire started at 4 Aunt Park Lane around 4 a.m. and was contained an hour later, with it completely extinguished in three hours, said Joe Masso, the Dodgington assistant fire chief.
He added this was the worst fire for Dodgington since 2000 in terms of manpower and equipment needed to put it out. About 60 firefighters from several departments and localities assisted or were on standby.
The single-family cape-style home constructed in 1939 is considered a total loss, he said.
“When 911 got the call, it was already a well working fire,” Masso said.
No one was injured.
The home is owned by Kenneth and Barbara Donahue, of Memphis. It was being rented by their son and two other men in their 20s.
The renters were inside when the fire broke out. Red Cross was called to work with them, Masso said.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
