Cops: Man threatened people with gun at Newtown restaurant

Police said the man accused of threatening people at a town restaurant Sunday afternoon was targeting the owner of the business.

Collins Verstegen lives next door to King’s Restaurant and was carrying a facsimile pellet gun, which was not loaded, police said.

It is still not clear what triggered the threats.

NEWTOWN — A man was arrested on Mother’s Day after police said he threatened people with a firearm in the parking lot of King’s Restaurant, 271 South Main St.

Collins Verstegen, 51, was taken into custody at about 4 p.m. following a brief pursuit, police said.

While in the police cruiser, Verstegen released his seat belt and kicked out the rear passenger side window of the car, according to the report. 

He was charged with first-degree threatening, second-degree reckless endangerment, first-degree criminal mischief and breach of peace.

He was held in lieu of $10,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in court on May 11.
