WASHINGTON — A capital campaign has been launched by the Washington Park Foundation to raise $675,000 to fund the creation of a landscaped park in the center of Washington Depot and refurbish the vacant Texaco station at the site.
The refurbished building and the park have been designed to accommodate a farmers’ market, movie screenings, children’s events, cultural exhibits, events and performances such as outdoor concerts.
“This marks the beginning of our construction phase,” said Douglas Day, president of the foundation, “an important milestone… Our vision is clear thanks to input from residents over the last two years.”
The Saturday Farmers’ Markets begin June 13. On June 27 and 28 the building will be the site of the Northwest Connecticut Art Council Open Your Eyes tour.
The Washington Park Foundation purchased the former Texaco station and property in 2013 for $650,000, money raised through donations by over 40 residents and area businesses.
“We’re starting to prove some exciting things can happen at this site,” Day said. ”
