DANBURY – Police arrested a man last week after he tried to flee on a bicycle while carrying heroin and cocaine on his backpack, authorities said.

Detectives in an unmarked police car Friday morning recognized a man riding a bicycle on Liberty Street as Mervin Bundy, a man they said was wanted on two outstanding arrest warrants from Waterbury and Connecticut State Police.

Police said the man had escaped from custody in at least two occasions in recent months.

The Danbury officers tried to stop the man using their sirens and lights, but Bundy “quickly turned his bicycle around” and tried to flee, police said.

Detectives then left their car, approached Bundy and grabbed his arm, but the man tried to pull away so they brought him to the ground, according to the report. After a brief struggle, Bundy was placed under arrest.

When detectives did an inventory of Bundy’s backpack, they found several packets of cocaine and heroin hidden between his clothes, police said.

Bundy, 40, of New Street, Danbury, was charged with two counts each of possession of narcotics and possession of a controlled substance. He was released to Connecticut State Police Troop A and he’s scheduled to appear in court on June 3.
