A Bethel High School senior was one of 94 students to win the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation College Scholarship this week.
Madeline Kroot will receive up to $40,000 per year for four years of study at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire.
The foundation described the award recipients as some “of the brightest and most promising high school seniors from across the country.” The Cooke scholarship program is one of the most competitive and generous programs in the country, the foundation said in a news release.
“The academic and extracurricular accomplishments this group has demonstrated are absolutely remarkable,” Harold Levy, the foundation’s executive director, said in the release.
This year’s scholars have an average high school grade point average of 3.86, high standardized test scores and strong teacher recommendations, the foundation said. The average family income for this year’s recipients is $33,168 and 41 percent will be the first in their families to attend college.
This year the Cooke Foundation received 1,814 applications for the scholarship from all 50 states.
