DANBURY — Those without a place to stay warm today do so at the Danbury emergency shelter’s day center, said Susan Zaborowski, Fair Housing Officer for the city’s Health and Housing department.
The day center at the 41 New St. shelter is normally open from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., but is open 24 hours today as it is during instances of severe weather.
Theday center also has showers, facilities for laundry and also access to case managers who can help connect them with other services from obtaining a state ID to applying for food stamps.
Later in the season the shelter expects to offer medical care as well once it receives approval to establish a medical clinic, Zaborowski said.
“It’s a warm place. They can be there all day today until the soup kitchen opens up at 4 o’clock,” she said.
But rather than standing out in the cold to get a bed in one of the city’s three other shelters, the day center is handing out slips for patrons to use for a bed at one of the city’s shelters and overflow locations.
“We disseminate all the tickets so that everybody will get a bed. Nobody will be left out in the cold,” she said. “Nobody will be turned away.”
