Some two-and-a-half hours after he submitted his official resignation of his school board seat in Brookfield, Greg Beck’s hearing on two ethics complaints ended as the resignation made further action moot, the ethics board ruled.
The two mothers who filed complaints, Sherri Keefe and Nancy Lincoln, both thanked Beck for “doing the right thing.”
Through his lawyer Brian Parrott, Beck agreed his Facebook remarks that led to the complaints was an act of “stupidity”" he regrets, and for which he apologizes, but he did not believe it constituted an ethics violation that could have led to further discipline related to his job. Beck made comments deemed offensive related to anniversary tributes planned to honor victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown. He stated he would give ammunition to his gun owner friends.
Parrott said Beck did not resign because of the ethics issue but rather as he saw his participation on board was proving a distraction and so he opted to resign for the best interests of the community.
Ethics Board Chairman Alice Carokan stated with his resignation the complaints are moot
Resident Rich Saluga stated the ethics board should never have proceeded to hearing because Beck was not officially a town official at the time of the posting. Carolan said probable cause for hearing was based on fact he made post while on duty at his town job.
