Greater Danbury area police departments and Troops L and A of the State Police reported numberous spinouts and minor accidents Saturday morning into early afternoon when snow and sleet hit with greater intensity than initially anticipated.

Traffic snarled from New Milford to points south in Ridgefield and Redding, police report. In Branchville railroad crossing gates malfunctioned bring Metropolitan Transportation Authority personnel to the scene for repairs.

“The snow came down almost in a bust for quite a while,” said Brian Edwards, meteorologist with ACUWEATHER. “I think that’s what caught people by surprise. Danbury got just 1 inch of snow but north of there, in New Fairfield, they got 3.5 inches in just over an hour.”

From 10:45 a.m. to noon snow came down in the greatest intensity, Edwards said. Some areas experienced “thunder burst” of snow, he noted.
