The Indian Association of Western Connecticut (IAWCT) celebrated the Festival of Lights, also known as Diwali, at Newtown High School in Sandy Hook on Nov. 9, 2013. Members of Greater Danbury’s Indian community came together to enjoy music and children’s dances representing Indian culture. Participants also had a delicious Indian dinner.
Diwali, a five-day celebration which also marks the new year, is an official holiday in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Mauritius, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, Malaysia, Singapore and Fiji. For Hindus, it is the most important festival of the year.
The name “Diwali” or “Divali” means “row of lamps.” Diwali involves the lighting of small clay lamps filled with oil to signify the triumph of good over evil. During the holiday, celebrants share sweets and snacks with family and friends.
Ajay Shah, of the IAWCT, said the organization sends its best wishes for a happy, healthy and prosperous new year to all. For further information, visit the association’s website at www.iawct.org.
