Wet or dry? The vote to decide has been postponed in the town of Bridgewater.
Voters in this small town were to go to the polls Feb. 25 to decide if their community should stay liquor-free or allow the sale of alcoholic beverages in restaurants and cafes.
First Selectman Curtis Read made the announcement Thursday that the vote was being put on hold while “further legal review” on the unusual nature of such voting takes place.
“Certain requirements of the Connecticut General Statutes relating only to ‘intoxicating liquors’ and specifically how a vote to repeal prohibition must be conducted has been brought to our attention recently,” Read said.
“I realize that this will be an inconvenience for many residents and for those proposing restaurants that can serve alcohol,” Read said, “but it is better to make sure the state statutes are followed when we do have the wet/dry vote.”
Read concluded that the town should take every precaution to avoid future legal challenges on the issue.
