In a moment of much-needed levity this week, Brookfield school board members Harry Shaker and Susan Queenan, who do not always share a similar point-of-view, prompted giggles from the entire board over Shaker’s proposal for long-term planning that he hoped might one day lead to a high school history course strictly oriented around the pivotal 1960s and 1970s.

“I know you want people to understand your age group; you could even teach the class and do it for free,” Queenan teased as Shaker laughed and the rest of the board joined.

Afterwards, Shaker said he appreciates the camaraderie he shares with his fellow board members, noting he and Queenan often engage in good-natured sparring on various  issues, and out of that can come some really good ideas.

And he says he isn’t giving up on the notion of a course dedicated to a generation he does know something about; a pivotal time in music, entertainment, art, politics and civil rights.

Think Beatles, the Kennedys, Rosa Parks, Bridgit Bardot, and Andy Warhol.
