Newtown High School Athletic Director Gregg Simon looked like a proud father as he stood on the bench and watched his hockey team celebrate its first state championship following its 2-1 overtime victory over Smith/Tolland Saturday morning.
It’s been a great winter for the Newtown High teams.
In addition to the hockey team’s thrilling victory – which was secured by freshman Scott McLean’s overtime goal – the Newtown wrestling team and dance team won their respective state titles. The wrestling team won the Class LL state title for the first time, led by state champs James Leuci (132 pounds) and freshman Anthony Falbo (152). And in indoor track, Jenna Calandro won the girls pole vault competition at the Class LL and State Open meets. The dance team has only been a part of the Newtown High athletic department for three years, and already it’s got a banner to hang.
“It’s been a wonderful winter for us,” Simon said. “Winter has never traditionally been our strongest season, but to win three state championships in the same season, it’s an amazing accomplishment for our student-athletes.”
