For the last three years, there’s been a remarkably lovely concert at Pizzeria Lauretano in Bethel _ a recreation of the Miles Davis Birth of the Cool sessions.
It’s happening again on Sunday, April 6 at 6 p.m.
The nonet that played this music was unique for its time, with both French horn and tuba and music that favored structure and melody over bebop improvisation. It is beautiful with wonderful arrangements by Gerry Mulligan, Gil Evans, John Lewis and John Carisi. It sounded revolutionary in 1957. It still sounds great today.
The group that performs in Bethel will use those arrangements and the original instrumentation, and will feature some excellent area musicians. It’s now become a sure sign of spring.
Pizzeria Lauretano is located at 291 Greenwood Avenue, Bethel, Conn. Music charge for this performance is $20. Reservations are strongly recommended by calling the restaurant at 203-792-1500. The website is www.pizzerialauretano.com
