A man and woman from Elmhurst, NY, were arrested in Newtown after passing counterfeit $100 bills, police said.
Azicema Z. Amcako, 32, and Ivan Javier Gonzalez, 39, both of Denman St, Elmhurst were arrested Thursday evening after Newtown Police responded to a call from the Big Y Supermarket, 6 Queen St.
It was reported a female customer, later identified as Amcako, was attempting to make a purchase with a counterfeit $100 bill, police said. After investigation, Amcako and her accomplice, Gonzalez, were taken into custody and charged with first-degree forgery, police said.
A total of 16 counterfeit $100 bills were seized. It was determined that the suspects had already made a successful transaction at Walgreens, 49 So. Main St., Newtown, with a counterfeit bill, police said.
Amcako and Denman would make small purchases at stores, pay with a counterfeit $100 bill and take the item and the change, police said.
Amcako and Denman were held on $10,000 bond each and appeared in Danbury Superior Court Friday.
Newtown Police were assisted by Connecticut State Police, Monroe Police, Seymour Police and the US Secret Service.
