The rivers in Connecticut are now overflowing with rain and welting snow. Near where I live, a small river has flooded farm fields and there are ducks swimming where corn will be growing.
So on the last day of March, it’s time to remind people again that “the waters of March” by Antonia Carlos Jobim is one of the very best songs written by anyone, anywhere, any time. The melody, like those in all Jobin songs is beautiful. But the lyrics simply a catalog of the everyday objects and happenings end up painting a full picture of the world days, nights, fights, mud. bodies in bed. And the refrain ties hall these things together , in affirmation
And the river bank talks of the waters of March
It’s the end of all strain, it’s the joy in your heart
What a song. It’s added to my appreciation of the natural world. I can’t see streams flowing fat now without thinking of what the river bank is saying.
