WATERBURY – A drug dealer died after he fell from a fleeing pickup truck during a drug transaction in Waterbury Saturday afternoon, police said.
Carl Brown, 35, of Waterbury, died of head injuries about half an hour after he was taken to Saint Mary’s Hospital.
Police said Steven Vlash, 22, of New Milford, was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Colorado with passenger Nicholas Henry, 23, of Bethel, when the pair stopped to buy crack cocaine from Brown on Grove Street.
The suspects then attempted to flee without paying, but Brown clung to the truck and held on for about half a mile before falling on Linden Street, where he suffered severe head injuries, Waterbury Deputy Chief Christopher Corbett said.
Police located the suspects at Vlash’s home in New Milford around 7 p.m.
Vlash was charged with evading responsibility resulting in death and criminal attempt at possession of narcotics.
He’s being held in lieu of $1 million bond and is scheduled to appear in court April 20, according to the state Department of Justice.
Henry was charged with criminal attempt at possession of narcotics.
Corbett said Vlash’s charges could be upgraded to manslaughter.
“It’s definitely unusual,” Corbett said of the case. “I don’t’ recall an incident like this before.”
Brown was a convicted felon who faced multiple narcotics charges, police said.
