MONROE — Two on-duty Danbury police detectives in an unmarked cruiser were nearly rear-ended — twice– by a man later charged with driving while intoxicated.

The Danbury detectives pulled off on Route 25 at 6 p.m. Thursday, to allow the driver to pass, and then pursued his vehicle while notifying Monroe police.

While following the suspect’s Chrysler 2000 the detectives saw it cross the double yellow line and nearly strike an oncoming car, said Capt. Michael Flick, the Monroe police spokesman.

The out-of-town detectives pulled the Chrysler over at Verna Road and Monroe police arrived at the scene to make the arrest, Flick said.

“They observed that the operator’s speech was slurred and the pupils of his eyes were pinpoint,” Flick said.

The driver, Henry Renzi, 66, of High Rise Road in Danbury, denied consuming alcohol, but reported that he was taking pain killers prescribed to him, police said.

Renzi failed field sobriety tests, Flick said, and was placed under arrest, charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

He was released after posting a $500 bond and will be arraigned April 20 at Superior Court in Danbury.

NEWTOWN – A federal bill named after slain first-grader Jesse Lewis would allow professional development funds for teachers to be used in social and emotional learning training.

Lewis was one of the 20 first-graders and six educators who were killed by a gunman at the Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14, 2012.

The goal of the new bill, introduced by Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-CT, is to give teachers training to recognize and manage social and emotional issues in school children.

“In honor of Jesse and the 25 other beautiful children and talented educators lost at Sandy Hook, this bill provides teachers skills and support to help all students grow into strong and healthy members of society,” Blumenthal said in a prepared statement.

The bill is being sponsored in the House of Representatives by Rep. Elizabeth Esty and Rep. Chris Murphy.

Jesse’s mother, Scarlett Lewis, said society has to take responsibility for the education and well-being of its children.

The system is designed to keep dust out with a vacuum, but it instead pulled the filter onto the electric heater, causing it to burn. The smoke entered the building through heat-curtain ducts above the main entrance.
