NEW MILFORD — Greg and Debbie South’s hearts were broken for a second time when they saw the vandalism done to a granite bench honoring their son, Joe South, who died in a car crash.

On Saturday morning, the Souths drove to the bench site on Danbury Road to lay down mulch and plant flowers. What they saw sickened them. The bench had been smashed with its pieces thrown on the sidewalk.

Joe South, 17, died in November 2004 when his pick-up truck veered to the east on Danbury Road crashing into two trees. A make-shift memorial was fashioned at the crash site by members of South’s New Milford High School class.

In 2012, a granite bench was placed at the site, now the location of Litchfield Crossings shopping plaza. The bench was smash sometime over Friday night into early Saturday morning.

Anyone with information is asked to call Officer Robert Tozzi at 860-355-3133.
