I am not much of a runner, but the description of the Spring Forward for Sandy Hook event is “A Celebratory 5K Walk/Run of Strength,” and you’ll note the word ‘walk’ comes first. That I could do.
And with the 26 Inspiration Stations along the route, walking would give participants a chance to absorb their messages. These stations are being created by the schools of Danbury.
The organizers of this event came up with it as a way to honor Dawn Hochsprung and Lauren Rosseau, who both worked in Danbury public schools before they worked at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Both women were killed in the Dec. 14, 2012 shooting at SHES.
The Danbury educators inspired to put on this event also wanted to acknowledge their colleagues who survived and have continued to teach the children of SHES.
Spring Forward for Sandy Hook will take place Saturday, May 18, 2013. Runners will start off at 8:30 a.m. and walkers will start at 8:50 a.m. from Rogers Park Middle School. The route will take participants down Main Street, so if you’re not participating, at least expect delays in the area as the event unfolds.
The cost is $30 per person, with those 10 and under allowed to participate for free. Register at www.springforward4sandyhook.com or visit the Facebook page, Spring Forward For Sandy Hook.
