Shelley Lowell, of Danbury, was walking her dog around her property last Sunday when she witnessed a rare sight.

A white deer was grazing on the outskirts of her home.

Lowell, who always feeds the deer that come through her property, had never see a white deer before.

“She was just staring at me and started to walk toward me,” Lowell said.

In fact most people have never seen a white deer. Only one to two percent of the deer population is affected by the mutation that causes the white hair.

Andy Labonte, a wildlife biologist said, the color pigmentation can range from subtle to extreme, as is the case with Lowell’s deer.

“We might see a deer or two with the mutation out of about 5,000 deer,” Labonte said.

Lowell quickly grabbed her camera from her home and started filming the deer until it took off in to the woods.

Now Lowell is always looking for the rare deer in her yard and hopes to one day see it again.

“It was pretty shocking,” Lowell said. “I felt so honored that she let me see her and didn’t run away.”

Has anyone else seen a white deer in their yard? If so let us know.
