DANBURY – A back-to-school supply drive sponsored by the United Way raised more than $58,000 to buy a stocked backpack for 333 city kids on their first day of school.
Each student received $175 worth of school supplies that included a $100 gift card to purchase school clothing.
Sponsored by the Volunteer Center of United Way of Western Connecticut, the Aug. 20 back-to-school drive was organized by the Western CT Business Volunteer Council.
The Danbury drive was one of three drives in the region that raised a total of $175,000 worth of supplies for 800 children.
“The program alleviates the financial stress associated with getting a child ready for school,” said Kim Morgan, CEO of United Way of Western Connecticut in a prepared statement. “Our back-to-school drives assist families in need during a time that is meant to be exciting.”
