Fire Marshal Bill Halstead said the burst caused substantial damage to the ceiling, carpet and many books. Parts of the ceiling cracked and fell because of the water.
The library remained closed for the day as the sprinkler system was repaired.

The Booth Library in Newtown is closed until further notice, after a pipe burst in the children’s selection.
Newtown Hook and Ladder is on scene at the library after a pipe burst, causing water to leak in the library. According to the police scanner, the water caused some of the ceiling to crack and fall.
No information has been released on the extent of the damage.
