NEW MILFORD — After 83 years in operation, The Homestead Inn on Elm Street in New Milford is closing on March 15.

Owner Sherry Greenman said the inn has proved to much to manage after the death of her husband, Bill Greenman, who purchased the inn in 2003. Greenman lost a battle with cancer in August 2014.

“It’s hard for me to be here every day,” Sherry Greenman said Monday. “Everything I do, every room I go into, I remember Bill and how he would be kidding around.”

Greenman had put the inn on the market in 2011 when first diagnosed with cancer. It is now in the hands of a Realtor. Sherry Greenman plans to return to her home country of The Philippines in April.

Orginally built by John Prime Treadwell in 1853 as a private residence, the Main house was established as The Homestead Inn by Mary Philpot in 1928. Over the years, it has seen its share of celebrity guests. Rumor has it that Joe and Rose Kennedy stayed there in Room #1 in 1930 when their son, John F. Kennedy, was attending Canterbury School.
