DANBURY – A Danbury High School teacher accused of having sex with her 17-year-old student has been fired, a city school official confirmed Tuesday.
Kayla Mooney was fired because she failed to maintain her certification, said Kim Thompson, director of human resources and legal counsel to the Board of Education.
Mooney’s attorney, William Westcott, did not return a call Tuesday seeking a comment.
Mooney, 24, faces a felony charge of second-degree sexual assault and a misdemeanor charge of providing alcohol to a minor. She appeared briefly in court on Monday with her attorney and supporters but did not enter a plea.
She had been on administrative leave since February 10, when a student in her physics class told school officials that Mooney had sex with him twice – once in her car and once by a lake.
Police conducted a seven-week investigation that included cell phone records and testimony from the student’s friends and Mooney’s colleagues. She was arrested on March 31.
Mooney faces 10 years in prison and a requirement to register as a sexual offender.
She is due to be arraigned on May 27 in Danbury Superior Court.
