UPDATE: MAY 5: 4:30 p.m.
Kent Fire Marshal Stan MacMilan said it is unlikely the exact cause of the fire will ever be known.
“I spoke with the owner of that property who said that he was not in that area and was in the house,” MacMilan said. “He said he believed he’d heard vehicles out in that area and they they had problems with people using the property.”
MacMilan said he found the area where the fire started and speculated on some instances where equipment of a motorcycle might have created a spark that caused the blaze. The fire will likely be recorded as “accidental,” he said. The property is owned by Castle Creek Partners.
KENT — Kent Volunteer Fire Department responded to a brush fire Saturday that burned 11 acres on the New York State/Sharon/Kent border.
The fire call came in about 1 p.m. and when Kent arrived on the scene in the northwest corner of the town, it was realized that the fire was a sizable one, according to Fire Chief Eric Epstein.
Mutual aid was provided by several New York towns, Sharon and Lakeville fire departments. The firefighters were at the site until dark when the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection took over. Gaylordsville Volunteer Fire Department stood by at the Kent Fire Station.
Epstein said the land was “hilly, rough terrain, heavily wooded,” making the fire difcult to fight. Firefighters fought the blaze hiking in with Tonto tanks on their backs.
