DANBURY — Police said they arrested a city man as he was about to sell crack cocaine to another man on Spring Street Wednesday evening.

Officers patrolling the downtown area on mountain bikes received information that Julio Irizarry, 43, was selling drugs in the neighborhood, police said. When they found the suspect, he was walking toward a buyer for what police said was a hand-to-hand transaction.

However, Irizarry noticed the officers approaching from behind his customer and took off running, according to the report. The buyer, who had not seen the officers, apparently did not understand what was happening and tried to run after Irizarry, police said. Officers could hear the man yell, “I need a 20,” which police said can mean a $20 bag of crack.

When police eventually caught Irizarry, they searched him and found a smoking pipe, four plastic bags with a rock-type substance and three wax-paper bags containing white powder, according to the report. Police said the rocks tested positive for crack cocaine and the powder tested positive for heroin.

Irizarry, a Spring Street resident, was charged with illegal sale of a controlled substance, illegal possession of narcotics and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He posted $10,000 bond.
