There will be three event – in Washington, Kent and New Milford – this week to raise awareness of the potential for water contaminated by chemicals from the hydraulic fracturing process involved in extracting natural gas   – i.e. fracking .

Connecticut does not have reserves of natural gas under its rocky substrata.

But the neighboring states of New York and Pennsylvania do. Pennsylvania allows fracking to mine for natural gas; New York has a temporary ban on the process while it studies the environmental and economic issues it raises.

There are now fears that the enormous amount of water used in fracking could be trucked to Connecticut for treatment. There is now a move underway in the General Assembly to ban such wastes from being brought into the state.

A local environmental group, Housatonic Valley 350,Food and Water watch is sponsoring the three events They are:

A short film “Fracking Hell?” and forum on fracking at Gunn Memorial Library in Washington on Thursday, April 3rd at 6:30 pm.

A showing of the film “Gasland II” and a forum discussion of fracking  at  the  Kent School Auditorium in Kent on Friday, April 4 at 6:30 p.m. , Kent

A showing of the film “Gasland II” and of discussion of the issues at the Bank Street Cinema in New Milford on Saturday, April 5 at 10 a.m.
